16/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – European Mobility Week got underway on Friday 16 September. The 2016 edition is dedicated to sustainable, smart mobility. The main aim of the event is to promote awareness of the economic benefits of environmentally friendly transport. Over 2,000 cities from 48 countries are taking part. The culmination of the event will be “car-free day”. Sustainable mobility is at the heart of the European Commission decarbonisation strategy that was presented this summer (see EUROPE 11602). Earlier in the year, the member states pledged to put in place by 2019 the regulatory and technical conditions needed for the expansion of connected and autonomous vehicles (see EUROPE 11533). Expectations are massive, particularly on reducing air pollution, road deaths and congestion in towns. (PH)
