16/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 15 September, on the eve of the informal European summit of Bratislava, the secretary general of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) wrote a letter to the heads of state of the EU, which was relayed to them by the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk. In it, the secretary general called their attention to the global challenge represented by migration. Taïeb Baccouche also wrote a similar letter to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) following the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China, this month. The Mediterranean is in the front line from both an economic and a humanitarian point of view, Baccouche stressed, adding that this will bring about a need for a new partnership framework for cooperation with the various countries of origin and of transit, in order to seek a permanent solution. The AMU believes that international dialogue on migration must aim to feed into in-depth discussions on the implementation, monitoring and review of the aspects and objectives of sustainable development relating to migration. He went on to argue that this will require a global, concerted policy, coordinated within a single ad hoc body, in full respect of the national sovereignty of each of the parties. (FB)
