24/08/2016 (Agence Europe) – At their meeting in Paris on Tuesday 23 August, French and German home affairs ministers Bernard Cazeneuve and Thomas de Maizière discussed the possibility of allowing judicial authorities to have access to terrorists’ encrypted messages within the context of terrorism investigations. Messaging service providers, such as Telegram and Whatsapp, should be required to work with judicial authorities in Europe even though there are headquartered outside the EU, the two ministers stated . “It must be made possible in the context of judicial procedures for the increasingly systematic exchanges conducted by means of certain applications, such as Telegram, to be identified and used in evidence by investigators and the courts”, said Cazeneuve, who wants “to provide our democracies with effective arms to deal with encryption”. This issue was discussed by EU justice ministers in Bratislava on 8 July. (SP)
