Brussels, 26/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - As previously announced, the Council of the EU adopted without debate on Tuesday 24 May, the legislative acts on the new fisheries agreement between the EU and Mauritania and the first fisheries agreement ever signed between the EU and Liberia (see EUROPE 11554 and 11548).
The Council decision on the conclusion of a new four-year protocol with Mauritania includes an annual financial payment from the Union to the country for access for its European shipping vessels to its exclusive fishing zone: €55 million a year (as opposed to €67 million for the most recent protocol). This amount comes on top of financial aid of €16.5 million over the whole course of the agreement, to promote sustainable development in the fisheries sector and environmental protection in protected maritime and coastal zones.
