09/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - World 'NDC' register launched. Two weeks after the Paris Agreement signing ceremony, nationally determined intentions (NDCs) for climate action now have legal status by way of the official register created for them by the UN on Friday 6 May (see EUROPE 11521). This temporary register provides a public illustration of what action each country is taking and is a key stage in putting the Paris Agreement into practice and which has now been signed by 177 different parties. Christina Figueras, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) explained that "The register underpins the collective trust and goodwill that led to this historic agreement and which represents a new step towards its implementation". UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon announced that he will be organising a meeting this September in China for strengthening the alliances developed at COP 21. (AN)
