26/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU needs approval system for autonomous cars, says ETSC. The EU should put in place a regulatory framework as quickly as possible so that an approval system for autonomous cars can be adopted, according to a report published on Tuesday 26 April by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). The long-term objective is for these cars to be able to operate in all member states. ETSC also calls for automated emergency braking systems and over-ridable intelligent speed assistance to be introduced. Approval is an issue that has already been raised by the car manufacturers association ACEA, at the last informal Transport Council meeting that focused on connected and autonomous cars, on Thursday 14 April (see EUROPE 11533). On the same day, EU ministers adopted a statement to prepare for the growth of this new sector by 2019 (see EUROPE 11532). (PH)
