18/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU demands investigation into deaths of arrested opponents in prison. In response to the death in detention of three opponents arrested on 14 April during a peaceful demonstration against electoral reform in Gambia, the EU expressed its deep concern on Sunday 17 April about the "disproportionate reaction from Gambian security forces". In a press release, the spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, stated "The EU is particularly concerned about the fate of Mr. Solo Sandeng and other opposition politicians who took part in the protest, as well as on reports on ill-treatment of persons taken into custody". The EU pointed out that Gambia has made commitments under international conventions on human rights and the Cotonou agreement and that the EU expects "that a thorough investigation, establishing the precise facts and responsibilities should be conducted".
