12/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for electoral process to continue in calm On Monday 11 April, the EU welcomed the calm conditions in which the presidential elections on 10 April took place in Chad "despite the pre-electoral tensions observed and certain logistic difficulties". It also called for the electoral process to continue in these calm conditions. The Spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, explained that "in the same perspective, it is important that the process for counting and compiling the vote takes place in an orderly and transparent way that can be verified". Voter turnout "is testimony to the commitment of all the people in Chad to accomplish their civic duty and attachment to the country's stability". Idriss Deby is bidding for a fifth mandate and appears the favourite to win. Whilst awaiting publication of the provisional results by the independent national electoral commission and the definitive results by the Constitutional Council, the EU "is continuing to follow the continuation of the process closely", particularly by way of its observers on the ground.
