Hogan highlights fall in some agricultural production prices

Brussels, 04/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - On 31 March, during a conference in Vilnius, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan, explained that as part of a reflection into ways of strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply chain, it is necessary to look at how certain production costs can be limited for farmers (agricultural output, energy, crop protection products). The Commissioner indicated that he was still concerned by the role played by farmers in the position they hold in the food supply chain. He pointed out that in January, he set up a task force focusing on the agricultural markets and whose overarching mandate "is to strengthen the farmer's position in the food chain". It is also expected to discuss a variety of subjects including transparency, collective tools, access to finance and long-term markets, as well as contractualisation. According to Mr Hogan, however, they should not restrict discussions to the way in which farmers can be best remunerated "We must also have the courage to plan for the future". He suggested that they look at the following questions: how can we more efficiently produce high quality foodstuffs; how can we limit costs for farmers when purchasing fertiliser, energy and phytosanitary products? The Commission is closely monitoring the fertiliser market and will not hesitate to take action if needed, explained Mr Hogan. The task force on agricultural markets will publish a report next autumn, containing the conclusions and legislative recommendations on the food supply chain, concluded the Commissioner.
