Asylum - reflection on revision of Dublin rules continues

Brussels, 15/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has postponed the presentation of its working areas for the reform of the so-called Dublin Regulation on the designation of the member state responsible for an asylum application.

Initially scheduled for Wednesday 16 March, according to the roadmap aiming to re-establish the Schengen zone (see EUROPE 11505), this communication on ideas for the revision of the Dublin Regulation, controversial issue, has been postponed to early April, but no precise date has so far been set.

On Wednesday 16 March, the Commission will focus on legal aspects of the draft agreement between the European Union and Turkey, which will be discussed by the European leaders on 18 March (see EUROPE 11506 and 11509). Among the questions raised are the systematic return of illegal migrants from Greece to Turkey, which has not fully ratified the Geneva Convention on the status of refugees (see EUROPE 11511). It will announce the latest statistics on the relocation process of refugees in Europe from Greece and Italy and the readmission of migrants from Greece to Turkey.

The Financial Times reports that the Commission has considered various options to revise the Dublin Regulation, such as entrusting new powers to the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) or setting up a quota system to divide up asylum seekers arriving in the EU.
