10/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - Mogherini calls for immediate and unconditional release of Nadiya Savchenko. On Wednesday evening 9 March, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini called on the Russian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Nadiya Savchenko, “for humanitarian reasons”. She stated that she has been following the case of the Ukrainian pilot with “the utmost personal attention” since the very beginning. She maxde clear that this was “no longer just a judicial or political case” but now a “matter of human compassion”. She added: “Her health condition is deteriorating rapidly and we all fear terrible consequences”. Savchenko began taking water again on Thursday 10 March but is continuing her hunger strike. When asked about sanctions against those responsbile for Savchenko's situiationas requested by MEPs (see EUROPE 11508), a European source said that the priority was obtaining her release. (CG)
