01/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for unity in face of Daesh attacks. The spokesperson of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy called on Monday 29 February, for all parties opposed to Daesh in Iraq not to yield to the provocation of the terrorist organisation which is designed to “sow sectarian discord” with suicide bomb attacks recently carried out in Sadr City and Mahmoudiya. The spokesperson described these latest attacks as “a demonstration of and a clear response to the military setbacks and major territorial losses suffered by Daesh”. “The only effective response … is to unite Iraqis around the project of a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Iraq, and to continue international support through the Global Coalition, of which the EU is a part”, she added. In her press release, she said that the EU will continue to support Iraq with all the humanitarian, stabilisation, development and security means available to it. The suicide attack on a market in Sadr City claimed at least 59 lives and injured 95 people on Sunday 28 February. In a separate incident in Mahmoudiya, some 30 kilometres south of Baghdad, a bomb killed at least three people and injured ten others. Since the press release, Iraq has been hit by further attacks.
