Brussels, 25/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - Italy has been sent a reasoned opinion (second stage of the infringement procedure) urging it to transpose the Commission directive on the quality of petrol and diesel fuels, the European Commission announced on Thursday 25 February.
This directive of 10 June 2014 (Directive 2014/77/EU amending Annexes I and II of Directive 98/70/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council relating to the quality of petrol and diesel fuels) updates references to the fuel technical standards sold within the EU. The deadline for implementation was 11 June 2015.
Despite a letter of formal notice sent on 22 July 2015, Italy has still not informed the Commission of its national implementing measures.
Eight other member states were also sent a letter of formal notice on the same date but Italy is the only one not to have implemented measures to remedy the situation, the Commission says in a press release. The Italian authorities now have two months to notify the Commission of the measures taken to transpose the directive, otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer Italy to the Court of Justice of the EU, which may, in turn, decide to impose financial sanctions.
