24/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU hails high turn-out and calm that has prevailed in Niger elections. Despite “some logistical difficulties”, election day in Niger, 21 February, passed off peacefully, said the EU in the evening of Tuesday 23 February. EU observers, attending the first round of the presidential election and the parliamentary election, will continue to monitor the electoral process closely. “The EU congratulates the people of Niger for turning out to vote in high numbers and highlights the commitment by all players involved which allowed citizens to carry out their civic duty”, said the spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in a press release. The EU calls for any future challenge to be made through legal channels. On Wednesday, the opposition announced that it could not recognise the partial results released by the national electoral commission, CENI. (AN)
