EU condemns latest Israeli provocation in Area C

Brussels, 08/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 6 February, the EU condemned the latest Israeli actions in Area C of the occupied Palestinian territory “which risk undermining the viability of a future Palestinian state” and called on Israel to reverse the decisions taken and to halt further demolitions. In a press release, Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini highlighted, inter alia, Israel's decision to declare 154 hectares of land near Jericho as state land, possible further settlement expansion and the demolition of several Palestinian residential structures in the south Hebron hills. “This is particularly concerning both because of the extent of the demolitions and also the number of vulnerable individuals affected, including children who need support”, stated Kocijancic. “Demolitions included EU funded structures”, she said, pointing out that EU humanitarian activities are carried out in full accordance with international humanitarian law. On Monday 8 February, Kocijancic said that “roughly ten structures” - shelters and mobile latrines - construction of which had been funded by European Commission Directorate General ECHO had been demolished.
