08/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU stands ready to assist Taiwanese authorities after earthquake. Following the powerful earthquake which brought down buildings in the city of Tainan in the south of Taiwan during the night of 5 to 6 February, the European Union will provide the Taiwanese authorities with assistance in their rescue operations, should a request for help be made. “The European Commission's rapid response centre is ready to intervene if the EU civil protection mechanism is triggered”, said a Commission spokesperson on Monday 8 February. The latest provisional figures put the death toll at 35, with more than one hundred people still missing. (AN)
