Go-ahead for updated bluefin tuna restocking plan

Brussels, 19/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 19 January, the European Parliament took on board the draft regulation to include all bluefin restocking measures in the East Atlantic and Mediterranean, which was adopted between 2012-14 (see EUROPE 11467).

During the plenary session vote, MEPs adopted by a large majority, an amendment by the S&D group calling on member states “to review the Bluefin tuna fishing quota system, which penalises small-scale fishermen, for the purpose of removing the monopoly currently exercised by large vessel owners and encouraging more sustainable fishing systems such as those used for small-scale fishing”

The European Parliament Fisheries Committee is now able to begin negotiations with the Council of the EU on this dossier. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
