14th interparliamentary meeting resolved to relaunch relations with EU

Brussels, 07/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - The 14th Euro-Algerian interparliamentary meeting, which took place in Brussels on Thursday 3 December under the aegis of the European Parliament delegation for cooperation with the Maghreb, decided to actively relaunch its work - marking Algeria's resolve to deepen its relationship with the EU.

Until a short time ago Algeria had shown its distance with Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and had not agreed to be involved in the neighbourhood policy. The country even demanded the review of its association agreement that had been signed in 2002, but implemented in 2005 after a significant delay.

These negotiations for a new deepening of Algeria's relationship with the EU will take place in the coming weeks, said Bernard Savage, the official at the European Commission responsible for relations with the Maghreb.

Following this course of relaunching relations, the delegation decided to create interparliamentary working groups (support for reforms and implementation of the Spring support programme for economic and political governance, diversification of the economy, support for SMEs, vocational training, science research, employment and energy security). Other working groups will deal with security issues, migration and mobility, as well as the reform of Algeria's health system. (Original version in French by Fathi B'Chir)
