16/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes release from prison of Arif Yunus. On Friday 13 November, the spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini welcomed the decision by the Baku Court of Appeal in Azerbaijan to transfer peace activist and historian Arif Yunus from prison to house arrest. This, the spokesperson said was a “welcome and positive humanitarian gesture”. Yunus, who is unwell, was sentenced in August to seven years in prison for fraud and tax evasion following a trial seen by many as political. Mogherini's spokesperson hoped that further measures would follow. Yunus's wife, Leyla, who is also in poor health, remains in prison after being sentenced to eight and a half years on similar charges to her husband. “The EU is ready to further deepen and broaden our dialogue and co-operation with Azerbaijan”, added the spokesperson.
