Brussels, 23/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - Hungary was sent a reasoned opinion by the European Commission on Thursday 22 October enjoining it to comply with the Commission decision on the definition of the European electronic toll service (EETS) and its technical elements, as set out in Directive 2009/750/EC.
Electronic tolling allows motorway users, after concluding a single contract with the EETS provider, to drive through the electronic toll systems set up throughout Europe using a single on-board unit. Thus, by 8 October 2012, the European electronic toll service should have been offered to the users of large vehicles in the member states which have put in place national systems of electronic toll collection.
Hungary has failed to put in place the necessary measures for the effective establishment of EETS providers. It now has two months to inform the Commission of measures taken to ensure full compliance with EU law, otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the EU.
