Brussels, 16/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - The leader of the parliamentary assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), Rachid Talbi Alami (who is also leader of Morocco's chamber of representatives), has launched a call to all parliaments in the Mediterranean region to adopt urgent measures in the face of the region's environmental degradation.
During a meeting on climate change between members of the PA-UfM and members of national parliaments, which took place in Paris on Thursday 15 October, the Moroccan press agency reports that Alami underlined that the region's parliaments have a “historic responsibility towards future generations”. He wanted “implementation of binding legislation enabling an end to be put to the practices and behaviour of big and small polluters alike, and enabling them to opt for a green economy taking advantage of innovative technologies”. Alami also called for the implementation of “international and regional plans as part of a strategic programme for the environment”.
According to the Moroccan press agency, Alami believed that “the EuroMediterranean's environmental problems - which are real and endanger the region's development and future - are made worse by other economic, geostrategic and socio-cultural factors, especially migration flows and the situation of crisis and instability that prevails in some countries of the region”.
