08/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - Parliament calls on EU to continue efforts at abolishing capital punishment. On Thursday 8 October, the European Parliament called on the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the EU member states to continue fighting against the use of capital punishment, to support the moratorium firmly as a step towards the abolition of capital punishment, and to continue pushing for its abolition worldwide. The EEAS should remain vigilant with regard to developments in all countries and should use all means of influence at its disposal, the Parliament states in a joint resolution that it adopted (569 votes in favour, 38 against and 54 abstentions). MEPs ask the European Commission to pay particular attention to assistance and political support for countries that are making progress towards abolishing capital punishment, and should continue funding projects on its abolition. The Parliament also asks the Commission to strengthen its controls on the export of products that can be used for executions. (CG)
