27/08/2015 (Agence Europe) - Member states discuss possible launch of second phase of EUNAVFOR Med mission. EUROPE has learned that on Thursday 27 August the ambassadors from the Political and Security Committee started discussing the possibility of launching the second phase of the EUNAVFOR Med mission in the Mediterranean for fighting against the trafficking of migrants. The ambassadors listened to a report by mission commander, Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino who, according to High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, has proposed moving on to this second phase. The second phase comprises two parts - the first involving the reasoning, search, seizure and diversion of the boats at sea if they have no flag or if the country whose flag they are flying gives its agreement; the second requiring a United Nations Security Council Resolution and/or an agreement from the Libyans for operation in Libyan territorial waters. Mogherini has said that the European defence ministers, then their foreign affairs counterparts, will discuss the issue next week at their respective informal meetings in Luxembourg. (CG)
