NEWS BRIEFS / (ae) cyprus

27/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - Reunification talks make progress on issue of property. The Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci agreed on Monday 27 July that, as part of the settlement of the Cypriot conflict, there will be different alternatives for the regulation of the exercise of the right of the individual to property. According to Espen Barth Eide, special adviser to the United Nations Secretary General on Cyprus, dispossessed owners and current users will have various choices regarding their claims to affected properties, including compensation, exchange and reinstatement. The exercise of any such choice shall be subject to agreed criteria. An independent Property Commission, comprising equal numbers of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot members, will be mandated to resolve property claims based on mutually agreed criteria. (CG)
