Federica Mogherini calls for unity

Brussels, 29/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 26 June, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini launched a call for unity following the terrorist attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait the same day (see EUROPE 11344).

“The terrorists want to divide us: our response will be more unity. No nation, no power can carry out this fight alone”, Mogherini stated in a press release, saying that Europe and the Arab world cried “together” for their victims. “And together we will stand against violence and sectarianism”, she said.

In Mogherini's view, “we need a truly global alliance - an alliance of civilisations. For this is not a fight among different worlds - the North versus the South, the West versus Russia.” “We are witnessing an unprecedented attempt to manipulate religion to justify terrorism and to foster divisions inside our societies”, she said, adding that “we will not fall into the trap”. Mogherini reiterated that the EU will keep working with all its partners to fight terrorism and promote peace and stability in the EU's neighbourhood.

While paying tribute to the victims of 26 June, Mogherini also said that her thoughts were with the Syrian, Iraqi and Nigerian people who “are among the first victims of terrorist attacks almost every day”. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
