Europeans meet Zarif to move towards an agreement

Luxembourg, 22/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 22 June, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and the European ministers from the E3+3 - Philip Hammond from the UK, Laurent Fabius from France and Frank-Walter Steinmeier from Germany - met Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Luxembourg to discuss “many open questions, as we enter the last stage of the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issues”, said Mogherini. Bilateral meetings also took place.

Before the meetings, Hammond stated that there was a need for a little more flexibility on the part of their Iranian partners. He said he hoped they would begin to see some real progress.

Fabius stated that France would like a robust agreement - in other words, an agreement that includes a time limitation to the nuclear capacities for research and production, a verification system (including, if necessary, on military sites) and a plan for the automatic return to sanctions should Iran breach its commitments.

The meetings were still under way at the time of EUROPE going to press. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
