EU calls for swift formation of new government

Brussels, 15/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - During the evening of Friday 12 June, the European Union called for the swift formation of a government in Moldova after the resignation of Moldova's pro-European prime minister, Chiril Gaburici, the same day.

“It is crucial that a new stable government is swiftly formed which is empowered to take bold steps”, Maja Kocijancic, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, said in an email. She called on the political forces “to act responsibly and constructively under the current serious circumstances”.

“The resignation of the Moldovan prime minister comes at a critical time where decisive political action is needed to tackle key reforms and redress the dire economic situation of the country”, Kocijancic added.

In the spokesperson's opinion, the key reforms are “needed urgently” in order to address the country's fundamental structural reforms, “in particular the banking sector”. Kocijancic stated that an agreement with the International Monetary Fund was “now quintessential” to stabilise the situation.

The European Central Bank announced in early April that it had discovered that €927 million had disappeared from Moldovan banks. Kocijancic stated that the funds should be recovered and that those responsible should be brought to account.

Gaburici's resignation was due to his decision to call for the general prosecutor and the director of the Moldovan central bank to resign, after the disappearance of this money. An affair involving a false high school certificate of Gaburici then emerged and Gaburici said that the affair, which in his opinion was of little importance, had been politicised and he wanted to resign.

Mogherini's spokesperson stated that the EU wanted to support a Moldovan government that will act resolutely to address the country's needs and undertake key reforms. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
