Brussels, 11/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 10 June, the European Commission published the results of the public consultation on the Lamy report recommendations on radio band frequency opened on 12 January and to which 356 stakeholders responded (individuals and organisations).
These results clearly show the support there is for a coordinated electric spectrum radio policy, which the Commission is also strongly urging. Vice-President Andrus Ansip, in charge of the Digital Single Market, and Commissioner Oettinger, in charge of the Digital Economy and Society, commented, “We need a more harmonised framework for spectrum management in Europe. This is a key objective of our Digital Single Market Strategy. Today's results show a clear support for this goal. The more divided spectrum is, the less efficient. More coordination is essential to boost Europe's connectivity and innovation”.
The “Lamy” report proposes a common strategy for optimum use of the Ultrahigh Frequency band (UHF) used by Hertzian radio broadcasting networks and cordless microphones but which is also necessary for cordless broadband to function (see EUROPE 11145).
Most of the stakeholders that responded to the public consultation believe it essential to define the way in which this part of spectrum radio should be used because radio waves know no borders and are a scarce resource. More than 60% of respondents have called for greater European level coordination for spectrum in order to reduce fragmentation. They also support a transition period so that they can more successfully free up the UHF band to mobile applications. This transition must be cost-effective and respect the timeframe decided. They also called for a common European position during the World Radio Communications Conference in Geneva on 2-27 November next. (Isabelle Lamberty)
