Brussels, 09/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 8 June, the European Commission approved the annual work programme for the Internal Security Fund for Police for 2015 worth €40 million, including €1 million envisaged for emergency assistance, the institution has said in a press release.
In order to maintain and improve internal security, the EU will seek to enhance capacity and preparedness of member states and the EU for CBRN-E-related (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear materials and explosives) risks and crises, and improve the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure.
Complementing national programmes, the annual work programme will provide support to transnational initiatives combating organised crime and criminal networks. It will focus particularly on drugs and firearms trafficking, smuggling of migrants and trafficking of human beings involving EU member states located along smuggling routes and in cooperation with relevant third countries. In addition, investments in horizontal tools for police cooperation, such as information exchange and training, are envisaged.
The Internal Security Fund, which has two components (police and borders), has been allocated close to €1 billion for 2014 to 2020. (Solenn Paulic)
