Brussels, 28/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 28 May, the Council decided to extend by one year the EU's sanctions against the Syrian regime and its supporters, as “the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate”.
The Council also decided to take measures for a travel ban and an EU asset freeze against one additional person, “a high-ranking military deemed responsible for repression and violence against the civilian population in Damascus and Damascus countryside”, a Council press release states. More than 200 people and 70 entities have already come under European sanctions due to the violent repression of the civilian population in Syria.
The Council also extended the existing economic sanctions until 1 June 2016. These include a ban on arms exports to Syria, an oil embargo and restrictions on certain investments.
The legal acts, including the detail regarding the military added to the list of individuals under sanction, will be published in the Official Journal of the EU on 29 May 2015. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
