NEWS BRIEFS / (ae) non-proliferation

28/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU disappointed at lack of consensus. Although it was not possible to reach a real consensus at the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) despite “weeks of strenuous efforts”, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said on Wednesday 27 May that the EU was determined to uphold and preserve the NPT as “a priority multilateral instrument for maintaining and reinforcing international peace, security and stability”. In Mogherini's view, the NPT is “the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime” and is “essential to the pursuit of nuclear disarmament”. The NPT is also important for the “further development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes”, Mogherini's spokesperson added, reiterating the EU's support for the three pillars of the treaty and for the respect and implementation of all related international commitments. The conference was held in New York from 27 April until 22 May. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
