Four Media-supported films win in Cannes

Brussels, 26/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - Four films supported by the MEDIA sub-programme (Creative Europe programme) have won awards at the Cannes Festival that came to an end on Sunday 24 May.

The film Dheepan by Jacques Audiard, received the most prestigious Palme d'Or award. Vice-President of the European Commission Andrus Ansip, responsible for the Single Digital Market, and Commissioner Günther Oettinger, in charge of the digital economy and society, stated: “We wish to offer our congratulations to the crews for this magnificent success. Their work contributes to our cultural diversity. We must support them in this digital age and encourage the circulation of their work on our continent. This is the direction of our single digital market project”.

Dheepan received European funding of €135,000 for its development and distribution. Another MEDIA-supported film The Lobster, by Yorgos Lanthimos, received the Grand Jury Prize, whilst actresses Emmanuelle Bercot and Rooney Mara both received the prize for best actress, with each of them acting in MEDIA supported films (Mon Roi by Maïwenn, for the former and Carol by Todd Haynes for the latter).
