ALDE concerned by adoption of French law on intelligence

Brussels, 06/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 5 May, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) at the European Parliament expressed its disappointment with the adoption by a large majority at the French National Assembly of the draft law on intelligence, despite the fact that many NGOs, parliamentarians and individuals had spoken against this text which they described as “liberticide.

“ALDE deplores that the voice of national consultative bodies, civil organisations, NGOs, and journalists, who expressed concern about the extension of the government power and the threat this law entails for civil liberties, has not been heard by the French deputies. The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe remind that citizens cannot be submitted to mass surveillance, that the rule of law imposes a strict judiciary oversight, and that fundamental rights should not be breached on the pretext of increasing national security”. ALDE intends to take the debate to the European Parliament and the European Commission has already been called on to examine this subject. The French Pirate Party has also responded by expressing its concern about this blow to the freedom of the French people. (Solenn Paulic)
