Brussels, 28/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 28 April, the European Commission welcomed the “positive” vote of the European Parliament on the multiannual management plan for cod, sprat and herring stocks in the Baltic Sea (see other article).
The plan is a big step forward in making fishing in the Baltic more sustainable, the Commission says. The approved plan is flexible enough to adapt to the realities of fisheries and to the conditions of fish stocks, ensuring that the best science is always used for the decisions on how fisheries should be managed, it further says. Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella welcomed the Parliament amendments on by-catches of birds and mammals. “Today's vote gives an important political signal for the future plans to come”, he commented.
