Brussels, 23/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 23 April, Ecommerce Europe underlined the importance of reducing cross-border parcel delivery prices in the EU.
According to Ecommerce Europe, 15% of companies not selling at the international level refrain from doing so because of excessive transport costs and 44% of companies selling abroad view cross-border logistics and distribution as a difficult barrier to overcome.
Ecommerce Europe is therefore calling on the postal sector to more frequently consult online commerce. The Ecommerce Europe body is delighted with the action that the European Commission intends to take with regard to the subject but calls for “clearer communication”. It also regrets that this kind of action is not considered as more of a priority.
Elzbieta Bienkowska, the European commissioner for the internal market, previously asserted her determination to rationalise cross-border parcel delivery prices (see EUROPE 11283). On Wednesday 22 April, she explained to the press that this would not involve any direct price regulation but rather an obligation to provide price transparency and an incentive to national regulators to examine this issue. She is working on this theme with Commissioner Andrus Ansip, in charge of the Internal Market, and measures could possibly be presented within the context of this sectoral strategy. (Jean Comte)
