Experts discuss copyright exceptions

Brussels, 26/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU has organised an international seminar in Riga on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 March to discuss revision of European copyright rules.

The seminar, Copyright Exceptions and Limitations within the Scope of the Review of the EU Copyright Framework, brings together member state experts involved in the EU Council Intellectual Property Working Party, which is working on legislation on intellectual property, copyright, trademarks and patents, and representatives of the European Commission. The seminar seeks to inform reflection on the revision of copyright, the new framework for which will be presented in the autumn. Discussions will focus on exceptions and limitations to copyright, that is to say, cases where protected works may nevertheless be used without the consent of the rights holders. What is the impact of these exceptions on the functioning of the single market? Should the current list of exceptions and limitations be revised? Is there a need to adjust the scope of these exceptions? How can these exceptions be better harmonised across member states? Copyright exceptions and limitations are an important element of the reform in ensuring the balance between the interests of rights holders and those of users, the Latvian Presidency states. The experts attending the seminar will address these various issues. (Isabelle Lamberty)
