Brussels, 19/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - During a telephone conversation on Wednesday 18 March, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini again insisted to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the need to relaunch the peace negotiations to reach a comprehensive peace agreement based on a two-state solution. In a press release earlier in the day, congratulating Netanyahu on the result of the elections, Mogherini had already stressed the relaunch of the peace process (see EUROPE 11227).
During her discussion with Netanyahu, Mogherini confirmed the EU's resolve to work with the new Israeli government on a mutually beneficial bilateral relationship and the peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The two leaders agreed to work together for Israel's security and that of the region. “The EU is ready to work with both sides and the international community, including partners in the Middle East region, to see the state of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign and viable state of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security and mutual recognition”, the press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS) states.
At the end of his electoral campaign, Netanyahu had dismissed the creation of a Palestinian state if he kept his post. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
