18/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for freedom of expression. On Wednesday 18 March, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that the EU was “following closely developments leading to the overnight detention and investigation” of Malaysian parliamentarian Nurul Izzah. The parliamentarian was arrested for a speech criticising the imprisonment of her father, the head of the Anwar Ibrahim opposition, for sodomy. “Freedom of expression, as well as independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, are essential features of a democratic system and need to be upheld”, Mogherini's spokesperson stated, adding that trust in the administration of justice was “a key element” of democratic society.
