Mogherini will not be visiting Dakhla

Brussels, 02/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - In response to a written question by Norbert Neuser MEP (S&D, Germany), High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has said she will not be going to Dakhla in the Western Sahara, where Morocco will be organising a world Crans Montana-type forum on 12-14 March. Officially, this is for reasons of her schedule being overloaded. Neuser is the chair of the parliamentary intergroup on the Sahara, which comprises 119 deputies and held its first meeting in Brussels on 25 February. The group wants to put pressure on European diplomacy for a less neutral attitude on this sensitive issue which has been the subject of intense negotiations at the UN. The EU stands by the UN resolutions for self-determination. The pro-Saharan MEPs criticise the “massive manipulation” exercised by Moroccan lobby groups at the European Parliament to discredit the Sahrawi refugees and deprive them of EU humanitarian aid. This is a direct reference to the recent report by OLAF (the European Anti-Fraud Office) on managing aid to Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf on Algerian territory (see EUROPE 11257). (Fati B'Chir)
