Brussels, 23/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - At a ministerial meeting in Brussels on Thursday 19 February, the European Commission restated its commitment to ending the energy isolation of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and to increasing the security of the region's electricity supply. The Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) is an example of a comprehensive regional approach to addressing the infrastructure challenges in the region, said Commissioners Maros Sefcovic (Energy Union) and Miguel Arias Canete (Energy and Climate) and Energy Ministers Urve Palo of Estonia, Dana Reizniece-Ozola of Latvia and Rokas Masiulis of Lithuania in a joint statement.
The Commission says it stands ready to assist the three Baltic States draw up a detailed plan of action for the synchronisation of the Baltic countries' electricity systems with the continental Europe network (CEN), on which the countries' electricity transmission network managers agreed at the end of 2014. The Commission also underlined the importance of involving Poland, Russia and Belarus since any decisions on synchronisation will also affect them. (Emmanuel Hagry)
