Hahn calls for progress on rule of law reforms

Brussels, 13/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 12 February, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn called on Turkey to make progress on its reforms linked to the rule of law.

“While reiterating the European Commission's readiness to assist Turkey in pursuing accession negotiations, Hahn stressed the need to advance - as a matter of a priority - reforms in areas related to the rule of law and fundamental rights”, the Commission stated in a press release, at the end of a meeting between Hahn and Turkey's foreign minister and negotiator in chief, Volkan Bozkir. According to the Commission, Bozkir reasserted his country's determination to make progress in the accession negotiations.

Hahn hailed the good cooperation with Ankara on preparing the technical meetings on alignment with the acquis communautaire.

The Commission stated that “the meeting (…) allowed for a diligent discussion of the next steps for advancing in the accession process and enhancing cooperation to the benefit of the EU and Turkey”. Hahn and Bozkir thus discussed the foreign policy dialogue and policies on migration, visas, the economy; trade and energy. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
