Brussels, 02/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - Stating that the thoughts of the European Union are with the family and people of Japan following the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, High Representative Federica Mogherini said on Sunday 1 February that the EU would do all in its power to ensure that those responsible are held to account. Islamic State announced the execution of Kenji Goto, 47, on 31 January. Jordan, in the meantime, is working to obtain the release of one of its military pilots, Moath al-Kassabeh, who was captured in December of last year. Mogherini said that all of the means at the EU's disposal would be used in regional and international efforts against this threat to human lives and to world security.
She again stated that the EU remained fully committed to opposing Islamic State and other terrorist groups operating in Syria and Iraq. She expressed the EU's support for the peoples of all the countries suffering most from terrorism. (CG)
