Pressure group for FIFA reform launched at Parliament

Brussels, 23/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - A pressure group calling for root and branch reform of how world football's governing body, FIFA, is run kicked off its campaign with a meeting in the European Parliament on Wednesday 21 January. The main aim of the “New FIFA now” group, as it has been named, is to prevent the re-election of Sepp Blatter, who has been FIFA president since 1998. It has the backing of several MEPs, in particular the members of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group. It is headed by businessman Jaimie Fuller, a sports ethics campaigner well known for tackling doping in cycling. Fuller said that the campaign was not about publicity. “FIFA's reputation has to be improved. We have a clear choice: should Mr Blatter stay or go? Football does not belong to Mr Blatter. … Whatever the outcome of the election in May, FIFA has to be dragged by the heels, kicking and screaming, towards change”, he said. Blatter has been under fire since December 2010 when it was announced that the 2018 and 2022 World Cups would be held in Qatar and Russia respectively. Suspicions of corruption in these decisions have abounded. (IL)
