Almost €8 million more in EU humanitarian aid

Brussels, 05/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to increase humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable sections of the population in South Sudan, by €7.78 million. This news was announced on 22 December last and increases emergency aid provided by the Commission in 2014, to a total of €117 million, to help the victims of one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world.

This assistance will help to provide shelter, drinking water supplies, access to purification facilities and protecting the victims of the conflict, which has left tens of thousands dead and 2 million people displaced.

Aid to refugees. At the same time, the Commission has decided to increase humanitarian aid by €50 million for the refugees sheltering in Horn of Africa countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda etc.), including refugees from South Sudan.

As a total of the funds earmarked by the European Commission and EU member states last year, more than €273 million in humanitarian aid was provided in a response to the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan. (AN)
