Brussels, 05/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On 30 December, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini criticised the recent violence in Libya, including the fighting in the Gulf of Sirte and the airstrikes on targets in Misrata. In Mogherini's view, this “can only bring further suffering to the Libyan people”. She stated that the EU stood ready to implement restrictive measures against those fuelling violence in Libya. Those who consciously undermine the efforts by the United Nations to de-escalate the situation and to set the basis for a political dialogue are subject to international sanctions under UNSCR 2174, she reiterated.
Elsewhere, the European Commission announced on 22 December that €2 million was to be released to help Libya (see other article). (CG)
