Brussels, 18/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Council has approved two preliminary agreements obtained in the institutional trialogue, which could change the face of road transport over the next few years.
On Wednesday 17 December, the General Affairs Council approved the introduction of the eCall device on all private cars from March 2018. This involves an emergency call system that is automatically activated in road accidents (EUROPE 11211). A new design for heavy-duty vehicle cabins that will be introduced around 2022 was also approved, with the Council's adoption of the revision of the directive on lorry weights and dimensions (EUROPE 11216). The European Parliament will still have to make these two new pieces of legislation official through a vote, which will properly take place next March. (MD)
