Strasbourg, 16/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 16 December, the MEPs re-elected Emily O'Reilly to the post of European Ombudsman, by a vast majority (569 votes in favour, 66 against and 43 abstentions).
In mid-2013, the Irishwoman took over from Greece's Nikiforos Diamandouros when he ended his term in office. On Tuesday, she was the only candidate in contention. O'Reilly has taken position on many subjects, such as transparency within the institutions and the phenomenon of the revolving door, on which she has called for a tighter framework. The purpose of the European Ombudsman is to carry out investigations into cases of maladministration in the institutions and bodies of the EU. Complaints can be submitted by European citizens, residents of the member states, businesses and associations established in the EU. (SP)
