Council condemns police raids

Brussels, 16/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - The General Affairs Council of 16 December condemned the recent police raids and detention of journalists and representatives of the media in Turkey, which “call into question the respect for freedom of the media, which is a core principle of democracy”.

The Council recalls that progress in accession negotiations depends on respecting rule of law and fundamental rights”, the ministers make clear in conclusions adopted the same day. They urge Turkey to “work on reforms which should provide for adequate checks and balances fully guaranteeing freedom”, including those of expression and of the media. They express concern at the undue interference by the executive in the judiciary, frequent changes to key legislation without due consultation of stakeholders, and restrictions on access to information. “The Council considers that stepping up cooperation and strengthening common activities in the area of rule of law and fundamental rights will bring Turkey closer to the EU”, say ministers without reference, however, to Chapter 23 which relates to this area.

Council states, too, that it looks forward to discussions with the Commission on the customs union, “with a view to future proposals aimed at realising its full potential”.

Ministers again urge Turkey to avoid any kind of threat or action directed against a member state and to respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of Cyprus. Hailing the commitment of the parties to finding a solution to the Cypriot problem, the Council considers that it is “more important than ever” to ensure a positive climate so that negotiations for a comprehensive settlement can resume.
