MEPs firmly oppose illegal cabotage

Brussels, 02/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - MEPs have rejected committee procedures for determining the list of serious road offences. The EP's transport committee (TRAN) has criticised the European Commission for not including illegal cabotage in this list.

On Tuesday 2 December, the TRAN committee adopted a resolution opposing the classification of these kinds of offences into a sort of committee procedure. This resolution therefore rejects the list proposed by the European Commission, which is still due to be adopted in the plenary session in two weeks time.

MEPs' main concerns, especially those of the Socialist MEPs, focus on social dumping, which deem in this connection, that this list of infringements is incomplete. They are calling on the Commission to present a new list of these offences, which includes illegal cabotage. The chairperson of the TRAN committee, Michael Cramer (Greens/EFA, Germany), insisted in this regard that “illegal behaviour has to be sanctioned in the stringent and harmonised manner all over Europe”. The committee's socialist coordinator, Ismail Ertug (S&D, Germany) said that this veto from MEPs sent out a clear message that the fight against social dumping and illegal cabotage must be taken seriously by the EU.
