Brussels, 02/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - “The milk market is heading for disaster”, so producers are looking to sound the alarm by holding a symbolic demonstration and photo opportunity outside the Commission buildings on 11 December.
The European Milk Board (EMB), the instigator of this action, says that, for months, milk prices have been in free-fall. In many countries today, producers are being paid less than 30 cents per kilo of milk sold. There is every indication that a market crisis similar to that of 2009 is in the offing, the EMB says in a press release on Tuesday 2 December. The EMB believes the situation will continue to deteriorate when quotas are abolished next spring (April 2015). As Europe drowns in milk lakes, politicians are quite happy to look elsewhere: the EMB intends to wake them up, the organisation states. (LC)
